Candidates are admitted under the general regulations, specified in the SGS calendar. Candidates must complete their online application and pay the application fee before the deadline outlined below.
Supporting Documents Required for the Application
- A letter of intent (two to three pages) — uploaded to the SGS application website
- A sample of written work in English (10–20 pages) — uploaded to the SGS application website
- Two letters of recommendation uploaded to the SGS application website by the referees
- University transcripts sent directly to the Associate Chair, Graduate, of the Department and scanned copies of academic transcripts uploaded to the SGS application website.
The department will consider your application only after you have entered your personal and academic information in the online application, submitted the application fee and uploaded your supporting documentation.
All applicants who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada are strongly encouraged to apply for the following fellowships at the time of their application for admission to the Slavic Department's graduate program:
The deadline for completing the OGS application is the same as the deadline for supporting documents set by the Slavic Department. The deadline for completing the SSHRC application is set by SSHRC. The department considers fellowship applications a significant proof of the candidate's seriousness of academic and professional purpose. Such applications will enhance the candidate's dossier in the eyes of the admissions committee.

Deadlines

Complete online application, payment and supporting documents by January 12, 2024.
- The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures will not be accepting students into the doctoral program or the masters program in Slavic Linguistics for the foreseeable future.
- Prospective applicants with a BA (or BA equivalent) will apply to the MA program, even if they intend to continue their graduate studies in the PhD program. All current MA students must reapply for admission to the PhD program in the final year of their MA program.
Application Instructions
- Access School of Graduate Studies application site.
- If for some reason you cannot use the online admission application, please contact the department.
- Enter your contact information, and an applicant ID number and password will be emailed to you.
- You can leave and return to your application at any point until you move to the payment stage. At that point you can return to check on the status of this application including whether we have received your supporting documents.
- Pay the application fee.
- Fee must be received by the School of Graduate Studies before we will consider your application. You may pay online by VISA or Mastercard. This payment method is secure. SGS and the University of Toronto will not have access to your credit card information. Please note that the process requires that popup blockers on your web browser be disabled.
- If you are unable to pay by credit card, you may print an invoice from the application and mail it with a certified cheque to the School of Graduate Studies.
- Submit required documents.
- In addition, remember that hard copies of supplemental documents must also be mailed to the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
- Please note: The application system will not contact your referees until after you have paid the application fee. Remember that professors you ask to write recommendations for you need time to write them and may also need time to mail them to us.
English Proficiency
If your native language is not English and you graduated from a non-English-speaking university, you are required to demonstrate your proficiency in English. You must schedule TOEFL exams (or other suitable exams, please consult this website) well in advance of the application deadline. TOEFL scores should be reported electronically to the University of Toronto using institution code 0982-00. Learn more about the SGS English-Language Proficiency Requirement.
Additional Information
Candidates are accepted on a competitive basis taking into account their qualifications and interests. Please do not be discouraged, but bear in mind that we receive far more applications than we can accept and many good applicants are, unfortunately, turned down. Make sure your application presents your scholarly accomplishments and interests in the best possible light.
As a rule, the department expects all applicants to have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Slavic languages and literatures or a related field in the humanities.

Funding
For 2023–24, the University of Toronto guarantees financial support to eligible doctoral students in the amount of at least $20,000 plus tuition and fees. The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures supports its master degree students as well. The funding is available to students in good standing for one year of MA studies and four years of PhD studies (students who enter directly into our PhD are assured four years of funding) and comprises a variety of resources including:
- External awards
- Internal awards and bursaries
- Research assistantships (a minimum of $300 within the funding package for RAs)
- Teaching assistantships (a maximum of $7,755 of TA/CI-ship(s) will be counted towards the funding package)
- Loans are not included in the guarantee.
